Sweat and Deodorant Stain Removal Guide

Sweat stains and the yellowing that comes with them are usually a reaction between deodorant aluminum and body oils, so plain detergent often is not enough on its own.

Clothing (White or Light Cotton)

  1. Make a paste of baking soda and a small amount of water, and work it into the stained area with an old toothbrush.
  2. Let the paste sit for 30 minutes, then rinse it out under warm water.
  3. Apply a liquid laundry stain remover directly to the spot and let it sit for another 15 minutes.
  4. Wash in the warmest water the care label allows, then check the spot in sunlight before drying, since the sun can help fade any remaining yellowing.
Safety note: Avoid chlorine bleach on deodorant stains, since it can react with the aluminum compounds and turn the yellowing a darker, harder-to-remove color.

Clothing (Colored Fabric)

  1. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and lightly saturate the stained area.
  2. Let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes, giving the vinegar time to break down the residue without affecting the fabric dye.
  3. Rub a small amount of liquid stain remover into the spot, focusing on the underarm seam.
  4. Wash on a normal cycle in the warmest water safe for the color, then check the spot before drying.
Safety note: Spot test the vinegar solution on a hidden seam first to make sure it does not affect the fabric color.
