Candle Wax Stain Removal Guide

Wax is a solid at room temperature, so the most reliable removal method uses cold to harden it further and heat to lift the residue that remains, rather than any liquid cleaner.

Carpet

  1. Let the wax harden completely, speeding it up with an ice cube wrapped in a cloth if needed.
  2. Gently scrape off as much hardened wax as possible with a dull knife or the edge of a spoon.
  3. Place a clean paper towel or brown paper bag over the remaining wax and press a warm iron over it briefly, letting the melted wax absorb into the paper.
  4. Move to a clean section of paper each time it picks up wax, then treat any leftover color with a carpet-safe stain remover.
Safety note: Keep the iron on a low setting and keep it moving, since carpet fibers can scorch or melt if the iron sits too long in one spot.

Clothing

  1. Let the wax fully harden, using an ice cube in a plastic bag to speed up the process if needed.
  2. Scrape off as much hardened wax as you can with a dull knife, working carefully to avoid snagging the fabric.
  3. Sandwich the stained area between two pieces of paper towel or brown paper and press a warm iron over it, moving to a clean section of paper as it absorbs the wax.
  4. Treat any remaining color with a liquid stain remover and wash as usual in the warmest water the care label allows.
Safety note: Test the iron on a low setting on a hidden seam first, since synthetic fabrics can melt at ironing temperatures.

Wood Furniture

  1. Let the wax harden fully, using an ice cube wrapped in a cloth to speed up the process without soaking the wood.
  2. Gently pry off the hardened wax with a plastic scraper or your fingernail, working carefully to avoid scratching the finish.
  3. Buff away any remaining haze with a soft microfiber cloth.
  4. If a faint mark remains, wipe the area with a cloth lightly dampened with a wood-safe cleaner, then dry it right away.
Safety note: Avoid using a metal scraper or a warm iron directly on wood furniture, since both can scratch or damage the finish.
