← Stain and Surface GuideRed Wine Stain Removal Guide
Red wine sets fast because the dye and tannins bond to fibers as the liquid dries, so the biggest factor in success is how quickly you treat the spill. Blot rather than rub, and always work from the outside edge inward to keep the stain from spreading.

Carpet
- Blot the spill right away with a clean white cloth or paper towels, working from the outer edge toward the center.
- Pour a small amount of club soda or cool water over the stain and continue blotting to dilute the wine before it sets.
- Sprinkle a generous layer of table salt or baking soda over the damp area and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes to absorb the remaining color.
- Vacuum up the salt or baking soda, then treat the spot with a carpet-safe stain remover and blot until the color lifts.
Safety note: Always test a cleaning product on a hidden section of carpet first, and avoid scrubbing, which can spread the stain and damage the pile.
Upholstery
- Blot the wine immediately with a clean cloth, never rubbing, since rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the cushion fibers.
- Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with cool water and dab it onto the stain with a fresh cloth.
- Rinse by blotting with a cloth dampened in plain water, then blot dry with a towel.
- For stubborn color, apply a fabric-safe stain remover formulated for upholstery and follow the label directions before blotting dry.
Safety note: Check the furniture care tag for a cleaning code (W, S, or WS) before applying any liquid, and always spot test on a hidden area first.
Clothing (Cotton)
- Stretch the stained area over a bowl and pour boiling water through it from a height of about a foot, which often lifts fresh wine stains from cotton almost completely.
- If the stain has already dried, pretreat it with a liquid stain remover and let it sit for at least 15 minutes.
- Wash the garment in the warmest water the care label allows, using your regular detergent.
- Check the spot before drying. Heat can set any remaining stain permanently, so repeat treatment if any color remains.
Safety note: The boiling water method works only on sturdy, colorfast cotton. Check the care label first and skip this step for delicate or dark, dye-prone fabrics.
Tablecloth or Linen
- Blot up as much wine as possible right away, then flush the back of the fabric with cool water to push the stain out rather than through it.
- Apply a liquid laundry stain remover directly to the spot and gently work it in with your fingers.
- Let the treated fabric sit for 15 to 30 minutes, then launder as usual in the warmest water the fabric allows.
- Air dry and inspect the spot before ironing, since heat can set any trace of the stain.
Safety note: Avoid mixing bleach with other cleaning products, and test colored linens in a hidden corner before treating the visible stain.
